Beginning Practice
Everything you need before your first class at ĀTMĀ.
A traditionally rooted yoga studio in Hoboken — āsana, prāṇāyāma, and meditation, grounded in practice and open to all.
01 · Welcome
If this is your first visit, welcome.
Most first classes come with practical questions. Which class should I choose? What should I bring? What happens when I arrive? This page answers the common ones.
Everything else, you'll find on the mat.
02 · Choosing Your First Class
There’s no right way to begin.
Some people start with stillness. Others with movement. What you need from your practice will change over time, and the schedule is built for that.
Foundations
Unhurried pace — how postures are built, where attention goes, how breath supports movement.
Restorative
Slow and fully supported, props doing most of the work. “I just want to lie down and settle.”
Every class is open to all levels unless noted otherwise. Teachers offer thoughtful guidance and options that fit your body that day.
There’s no wrong place to begin.

03 · What Practice Feels Like
A first class is mostly about learning.
Where your hands go.
How a posture is built.
When to breathe.
Nobody expects you to already know these things — that’s what class is for. Expect to move. To hold. To rest. None of it is a performance. Teachers offer options rather than corrections, and resting is always a valid choice.
Slow, steady breathing engages the parasympathetic nervous system — the branch that helps settle the body. It isn’t mystical, and we won’t pretend it is. It’s practice.
The postures, breathwork, and meditation taught at ĀTMĀ come from traditions developed throughout South Asia over many centuries. Teachers use both Sanskrit and English. You don’t need to know either to begin.
